Northern Ireland Peace Walls

Northern Ireland still has a barrier between the Catholic and Protestant parts of the country to prevent conflict between the rivaling groups. Construction began in 1969 following the 1969 Northern Ireland riots. Although they are no longer necessary, the communities around the walls don’t want them to be demolished because they’ve become such a piece of art and beauty taking the name of “Peace Walls.” Recently, they have become a tourist attraction since artists as well as regular citizens have painted murals, poems, and thoughts onto the walls.
